NOAC Part 16

The closing ceremony was quite inspirational. It really drilled home the power of ONE theme of the conference.

Afterwards, there was ice cream in the parking lot. There was also 4 hot air balloons, not counting Gene.

We came back to the dorms and the youth went straight to the lobby for the final patch trading session.

Now is time for the Final NOAC awards:

Most useless junk collected in 1 hour - Artie Brace. Most useless junk collected in 2 hours - Artie Brace. Most useless junk collected in 1 day - Artie Brace. Most useless junk collected in 2 days - Artie Brace. Most useless junk collected in 1 week - Artie Brace. Most useless junk collected - lifetime achievement award - Artie Brace.

On a separate note, this category is now closed - forever. Anyone thinking about entering - don't bother you have no chance.

The you can take the person out of New York but - David Puzzo. David never let us down. Whenever we needed a cynic, he was there. Any time a stupid action needed to be pointed out, David was at the ready. But, I will let you in on a little secret. You have to promise to not tell anyone, David doesn't believe any of it. His mouth might be New York, but his heart is pure Mid-west.

Student Athlete of the conference - Matt C. Not only did Matt have perfect attendance for his own training sessions, we think he attended everyone else's classes too. And, to top it all off, he earns National rankings in not one but two sports. Way to go Matt.

The you think I am quiet award - Joey B. Some day, when you have a chance, just listen to Joey's reactions to the world around him. He is quite insightful, and sarcastic, and rarely misses an opportunity to have some comment about the world around him. You are a trip, Joey.

The I can keep up with the older guys award - Kevin. Kevin didn't miss a step. Despite being the youngest person here, he was right there all the time. He tried hard to beat the big guys at every game. Maybe he didn't, but he did compete. The older youth ribbed him as much as each other and he wouldn't back down. This father is very proud.

Watch out for the quiet guy award - Joe S. Joe doesn't say a lot and when he does it is not loud. But watch out, he is as competitive as they come. Whether it is patch trading or just some card game. Joe is out to win.

And the natural leader award is to Patrick. Pat doesn't bark orders or push anyone around, but he gets it done. As contingent chief (don't hang me if that isn't an official title) he kept the other youth working together. He built consensus and real showed himself to be a true leader.

That is this last night's awards. For those of you expecting more humorous awards, sorry to disappoint. However, I have been proud to get to know these young men better over the last 5 days and wanted to pay them tribute for who they are. All the parents out there should be proud of these young men. Or better said, they certainly did you proud this week.

Tomorrow we head to Sandusky Ohio to go to Cedar Point Amusement Park on Friday. NOAC is now behind us except for the good byes and the last minute trading.

We return to Queens on Saturday and look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Until then,

NOAC Part 15

Wow. What a day here to wrap up the conference.

Morning started early with an advisor breakfast @ 7:00. So, your cub reported here was up an off for my morning consitutional (1.5 miles or about 1.4 miles more than my feet wanted to travel and an hour earlier than they wanted to go anywhere). Good thing it was mostly down hill (uh oh I have to go back afterwards).

At the breakfast we learned that NOAC 2012 will be held at Michigan State University. The event will take place from Monday, July 30 to Friday, August 3.

I ardently hope that these little missives have accomplish a few things: 1. I hope that the parents felt in the loop with the goings on. I know from experience that information is not always forthcoming. I gotta go, I am with some people, in the middle of something, tired or whatever other event makes it inconvenient to share a couple of minutes with us parents. 2. I hope that they made all of you that decided not to come very regretful of your decision. This is a tremendous experience and all Arrowmen should have at least 1 NOAC in their lifetime. 3. Most importantly, because #2 does no good unless I have done some small part to get people interested in the next NOAC. I hope that interest in this event is increased so that when the youth return with their stories - every youth member will be chomping at the bit for next time.

That said, we now know when the next National Conference will be and the youth who were here can begin to execute on their plans for next time. Last I heard, they want to have 25 youth members and 10 adults attend the next conference. They have plans for patches and fundraisers so that the entire contigent cost is covered. Lofty goals, for sure, but let's all support them in attaining them.

After I made it back to the dorms and successfully fought the urge to go back to bed, we gathered the troops and headed down to the "Experience". Many vendors had displays of their products. There were also many skills booths set up for important scout skills - knot tying, sleeping bag stuffing. There was even a place to have target practice with blow darts.

The 2010 Jamboree had a booth, as did Boy's Life and the OA High Adventure groups.

From the Experience, it was off to the Goodman Games. Some of them included: Tic Tac Toe relay races Sawing through a log races Tandem ski races Criss Cross tug of war Frisbee Toss Kicking a Soccerball wearing coke bottle glasses. A leave no trace Crime scene And many others

On to lunch. Picnic style - sandwiches, chips, apples and drinks. And a much needed rest after the embarassment the youth had in the tug of war.

From there we went down to the Founders Day Fair. Lodges from all over the country had set up booths to show off something from their part of the country. Mississippi river mud, sea shells, shark teeth, hats patches, shirts, stickers, salt water taffy, games and branding booths were just some of what was on offer.

For those who had some extra energy, there was a COPE course and for those who needed some additional entertaining, there was Indian music and dancing shows.

After exhaustion began to set in, everyone went back to the dorms to rest up and prepare for the evening. Artie needed to change his feet. The youth needed to spend some more time patch trading in the air conditioned lobby. Chris and I just needed some time in the air conditioned lobby. Gene spent time on EBay looking for some elusive patches and Dennis spent some time in his room, he had missed it having been out for several hours in a row.

A quick dinner at the cafeteria and then everyone had to get ready for the closing ceremony and ice cream social.

We are headed down to the arena for the evenings activities. Will be back later with more

NOAC Part 14

I know I said there wouldn't be another update until tomorrow, but I can't help myself. There is a lot going on that gives me plenty to report.

The evenings activities started out with an inter-regional dodge ball competition. Our region, the NorthEast Region, defeated the Western Region in round 1. We then had the championship round where we went on to be defeated by Southern region.

The victory and subsequent defeat were accompanied by a litany of bragging and then excuses. A few are included below.

On the first round victory- All hail the conquering heros! Did you see how I evaded that rocket! I felt bad for them it was so one sided. Did you see my guns? And that is why I was the Athlete of the day!

On defeat in the championship, this was followed by the inevitable excuses - I swear I didn't see it coming! But there was a patch that someone dropped that I had to pick up! But Chris blocked my view. I didn't think he could catch a curve ball. The sun got in my eyes! (It set an hour ago). I didn't want to win anyway I didn't mean to push Joey B. in the way Who was the wise guy who threw Kevin at the other team? The guys from New Jersey threaten to whack me if I didn't throw the game.

All in all, a good time was had by all. And, in reality, sportsmanship reigned.

After the dodge ball competition, everyone picked up their bruised egos and headed to the stadium for the HODAG. Root beer and baked potatoes - the midwest is not exactly known for their culinary masterpieces. I will give them barbecue and chicago hot dogs neither of which hit the menu here, yet.

Tonights social butterfly award went to David, who re found his mojo after a decent night sleep.

Matt is bestowed the Doctor of nonprofit beer for being able to tell the difference between root beer, birch beer and sasparillo.

The final award for tonight goes to Joey B. We think he swallowed a potato whole and deserving is bestowed the What Potato Award. Honorable mention in this category goes to Joe S. who had to chew twice.

A final note, Dennis left his room to go to the museum. He hasn't returned yet so we do not have any recent Bruce Cobern sightings to report. Cans of diet coke are now selling for $5 each on the Bloomington Commodity Exchange, so we are sure he is still here somewhere.

Good Night.

John

NOAC Part 13

Waldo entered the dining room just as we were leaving the dining room. He looked a little darker than usual and wasn't doing any funky dances, but we think it was him. We have a picture that will be posted soon. You can judge for yourself.

Who's smarter than a fifth grader award to Joe Sturcken who didn't realize it rained to today because he was in class.

Least original new nickname award - Patrick who is now being called "Patch Rich"

The I'm sick of wearing Orange shirts to Chris who went out a. bought a snazzy new gray Power of One shirt. I think he shipped all his other clothes home.

The How does he know that guy award to Kevin. Others are very curious as to how he knows the national chief and vice chief. The answer is the Section conclave that was in June. They we're karaoke partners.

The I am never wearing anything that is not orange award to Pat - mostly I think because it annoys his father.

That will be all for tonight. Need to save some creative juices for tomorrow and some sort of anti climactic conclusion.

NOAC Part 12

Last nights ceremony was centered around Indian dance and song. We were treated to a fantastic display of both. It reminded me of when I was a youth member in the late 70's and early 80's (yes, rapidly becoming in danger of being kept in a museum), Suanhacky had a ceremonial team to be rivaled. I remember them even performing at a Bar Mitzvah (only in New York). Let's see if the boys come back with enthusiasm about this.

After the ceremony, we all went to a pizza party for the Section. It was great to see the fellowship. It also highlighted the importance of attending events beyond honors weekend. I saw the youth that had attended the section event at Tri-Mont a few months ago jumping into it with others they knew. For them it was a gathering of friends. They quickly introduced the other brothers and all had a good time.

Today is overcast, but not raining. The clouds did their emptying overnight. Some really spectacular showers for anyone that was awake this morning between 3 and 4.

Our youth are out at their training classes and such. Their energy and enthusiasm are as incredible as last nights light show. In some of the conversations I have had with them, I learned that they will be coming back with some lofty goals. Let's be sure to ALL support them in their efforts. The Power of One theme of this conference is something that I see them embracing in an extremely positive way. I want to be sure that all of us do our part to support this fire. Remember that naysayers also have the power of one in a negative way. A note to all the active adults on this boars - by nature of the commitment you make and the positions you hold in volunteering for the BSA and the OA, you have the respect of the youth. This gives you significant influence over them. Let's all make the commitment to use this influence to support THEIR initiatives not to drive our agenda. Enough said.

Now to dispense with some popular myths about Indiana and the mid west.

Contrary to popular believe, there are sidewalks. And they mostly do not have corn growing from the cracks.

The people here do not move at glacial speed. In fact, when the youth went for pizza the other night, their pie was delivered to the table in 1 hour and 14 minutes flat.

Basketball is not quite the obsession we have been led to believe. Hoops are only set up on every other corner.

Despite this being where the Hoosiers are - I have yet to see Gene Hackman.

That is all for now. Back again later

NOAC Part 11

Monsoon season has come and gone here in Indiana. The forecast called for sprinkles. The weather people here are as good as those in NY. We have had about 3 or 4 inches of sprinkles in the hour of torrential rain. I took a picture of a sand volley ball court virtually submerged. And I would think that would be the best drainage around. I also have a picture of some youth trying to swim in the volleyball court - none of ours - but funny none the less.

Do not worry - A note was texted to everyone telling them to get indoors as the storm approached us. The consequence of not heeding the warning - extreme wetness.

I have confirmed that the Award for smartest (or luckiest) contingent goes to us. There wasn't even a damp shirt in the mix. The driving sprinkles have given way to a misty downpour. (Just trying to get my Indiana weather terminology correct - if before was sprinkles, this must be mist.)

The I'm not hungry, I'll just flirt award goes to Matt. Matt lost the pass that allows us to get into the cafeteria. He hasn't gone hungry however since he has just taken to flirting with the young lady checking passes and has gotten in every time.

The patch trader oops award goes to Kevin who traded the lodge flap portion of a two piece set twice and now has the pocket piece only of two lodges - good luck getting rid of those!

The Aquehonga camper award goes Joey B. His tendency to wax nostalgic about Keowa at every opportunity leads me to believe that his reaction to this will be worth the torment he will surely put me through as a result.

The wall flower award goes to David Puozzo who at last night's section gathering surprised everyone by sitting off to the side. He must have been tired.

The social butterfly award last night went to Pat who was in the thick of multiple conversation simultaneously.

Tonight will be the regional gatherings and something called a Hodag. Tomorrow is Founders Day and should be a lot of fun for everyone.

More to come...

NOAC Part 10

Another great day here at NOAC. Sunny skies, 85 degrees and 7,000 other Arrowmen - how could it possibly be bad.

Threadhead that won't admit it award- David

True colors are beginning to show through. Mr. "Too cool to patchtrade" Puozzo has been secretly building a collection that is first rate. Just don't expect him to admit to being another "Threadhead" but you all know better now.

Patch traders of the day- Joe B and Kevin

I think our younger traders, Joey and Kevin, are showing themselves to be ruthless. I think they got Gene to trade his ENTIRE collection for three wooden nickels and some pocket lint from Baden Powell. Again my sources might be suspect.

Athletes of the afternoon- Matt and Joe S.

We also had some athletes making names for themselves in the WII Olympiad. Joe Sturken is a national finalist in Bowling and Matt C. Is a finalist in both bowling and tennis.

I am not a relic award- Artie

Artie and Chris went to the museum. Good thing Chris was there, they wanted to keep Artie as one of the exhibits.

Power of One Award - Pat McDoughall for allowing David to go in his stead to a dinner with the National Chiefs. Why? Because it meant something to him. It is simple acts of kindness that make a difference. Maybe you remember the movie - Pay It Forward.

On a separate note -

For all of those that sent notes of worry ( actually no one did, but it sounds better that way) we had a Bruce Cobern sighting. We saw him loping over the rolling hills of Indiana University carrying a bag of Orange shirts and delegate patches. Several attempts to photograph the elusive Mr. Cobern failed, only catching the side of one of the omnipresent tan shoes.

And a note to the Politically Correct Police that took exception to my use of the term "boys" instead of "youth". There were several. I apologize if I offended anyone. I would also share the following - please sing the following to the tune of three blind mice.

Three visually challenged domestic rodents. Three visually challenged domestic rodents. See how they run. They all ran after the agricultural engineers female domestic partner...

You get the idea. The point is, sometimes a term is just a term and forcing some perceived injustice is just not right. That said I will no longer use this term.

As it is already past 10p.m., I will not be sending a midnight note tonight and everyone will hear from me again tomorrow. We have a sectional pizza party tonight and I intend to try and get some sleep immediately after escorting our youth members back to the dormitory.

Good Night.,

WWW

NOAC Part 9

I have heard it loud and clear that last night's missive was missing the snide musings of this delegate and therefore a little too serious. We will try and keep them on the lighter side going forward, or at keep some element of lighter fare. AND, for those of you that advocated the destruction of African coastal butterflies, need I remind you of the principles of Leave No Trace?

Last night's ceremony was nice. They gave out many distinguished service awards. I think the youth were likely a bit bored, but tonight is the indian dancing and ceremonies. All are looking forward to it.

So without further delay- lighter fare by way of more awards.

Patch trader of the day - Joey Brenner, who somehow turned a simple lodge flap into 1 of a set of which only 20 were made through a series of trades.

Power of One award - Mike Lectora whose hard work allowed us to get here for this event. Thank You, Mike!

The Ghost of Advisors Past, Present and Future Award - Bruce Cobern, who has not been sighted at the Museum yet by those who have visited it. We do believe he is here because there are no available diet cokes on that side of the campus.

Iron Chef Award - the Indiana University Dining Hall staff. Menus seem to be a random selection of items from various food groups. There didn't seem to be a lot of thought put into whether each item goes with the others - powdered eggs, toast and the remnants of the night before ravioli certainly made for interesting breakfast choices.

Iron stomach award - those in the contingent who enjoyed the scrambled egg and ravioli on whole wheat toast sandwiches that were being eaten and seemingly enjoyed.

Until later,

NOAC Part 8

As day 2 comes to a close, it has quickly become almost midnight again, I thought it would be appropriate to reflect a little bit on what this NOAC is all about.

The theme is the above noted - The Power of One. Examples being given are people like Ghandi, Mother Teresa and Jackie Robinson. And although these examples very clearly show what power one person may have, the message is simpler. Each and every one of us has the power to make a difference. We can make a difference in another's life through our words, through our actions and unfortunately sometimes through the lack of either. Our Order is a Brotherhood of Cheerful Service and the natural result is Leadership. This conference is helping all of us to focus on the potential impact of that service. Our Order focuses on Service and Leadership to and within Scouting, this conference is helping us to recognize that these qualities can and should extend beyond the various parts of the Boy Scouts. Service and Leadership are not just the cornerstone to your membership in the Order of the Arrow, they are not just a group of traits or a philosophy you bring back to your troop or crew from the Order, they are the building blocks to a life that will certainly make a difference to the world around us.

The boys who return from this NOAC will certainly entertain us all with stories of conquest in the world of patch trading. They will be full of accounts of the experience, chock full of humor, fellowship and maybe some drama. But through their participation here, they will also be ambassadors back to us of the message within the power of one.

That is what I believe will enable them to make a difference in all our lives. That is what we can hopefully embrace ourselves and decide to share with others. I have heard it sometimes said that a single butterfly off the coast of Africa can flap its wings to start the flow of air that builds into a Hurricane on our side of the Atlantic. Let's not allow our influence to be destructive, rather, let's all make sure to be the positive force we are capable of being.

I am tired and rambling and shall leave it there for tonight. I do hope the message came through my scattered thoughts.

NOAC Part 7

10:30 a.m. - Bloomington, Indiana

A little over night drizzle leads to a beautiful sunny day here in Bloomington. The only clouds this morning were in some the minds of the sleep deprived. But there are things to do, places to see, people to meet - who has time to sleep in.

Awards for first day accomplishments:

Patch trader of the day goes to Pat McDoughall for an impressive 4 for 1.

Energizer Bunny award to David Puozzo for 6:00 a.m. exercise class although it is unclear if his participation was in person or from a dream state. Our sources are working on verification.

Poetic Justice award - the restroom lines are only for the men's rooms. Our women brothers would appreciate this.

Indian Dance award - to the many brothers on line at the restroom.

The Animal Symphony Award - the two bears sleeping in Room 3-225. One of them is my Roommate Chris McDoughall and I won't divulge the other's name.

The "No Ear Plugs Needed" Award - Arnie and Dennis, our neighbors in Room 3-223 who somehow looked refreshed this morning despite the dueling snorers in the adjoining room.

The "Wish You Were Here" Award - to Mike Lectora. He put all of this together for us and couldn't come at the last minute - Feel Better Mike - from all your brothers.

NOAC Part 6

Some new updates for day 2. Dinner time.

People seem to like the awards theme as a way to deliver some news, so they continue:

New patch trader of the day- Kevin - Traded a two piece lodge set for a helicopter patch. Traded the helicopter patch for a 6 piece spoof muscle car set. Traded the muscle set for 5 two piece lodge flaps.

Matt - "student of the lodge". Rumor has it he went to 6 classes today.

Joe Sturcken- the "A Scout is Clean Award" for avoiding the bus ride because of its lack of shower facilities.

Tchotcke king - Chris who filled both bags Artie gave us, the two free ones he got here and his suitcase. Note to rest of McDoughall family. Chris will be shipping his laundry home since he no longer has room in his suitcase. Whoever opens the box has to wash the clothes.

The "I AM a Native New Yorker Award" - David - wait on line for grapes? Yeah right! Whose gonna stop me.

David is also the recipient of the "Curmugeon Award" for the direct quote - "I don't patch trade. You can't get spoofed if you don't participate."

The you're grounded award - Dennis, who has spent more time in his room than anyone else here.

Joey Brenner - TMR reunion award and the Social butterfly award. We think he now knows more people here than the national chief..

More later.

NOAC Part 4

Midnight - Day 1 is now in the books.

The youth are all snug in their beds, Visions of lodge flaps dance in their heads. Kevin carried our 6 foot by 3 foot lodge flap in the parade that was part of the opening ceremony. I believe everyone enjoyed the entertainment.

It turns out that one of our fund raiser patches is in high demand. It is a misprint with a button loop and very few were made. The kids, including Artie and Gene, are having a ball trading.

We will sign off for tonight. Breakfast is early - 6:30 and tomorrow will be busy.

More updates as we go along...

Apologies for some inevitable typos in these missives as I am pecking this into a blackberry. To clear up one thing - there were no insane crows before, just an insane crowd. (See typo below) There was however lots of crowing since everyone here is proud of who they represent. Our boys are no exception.

Good night.

NOAC Part 3

We are now at the opening. It is 7:30 on Saturday evening. We have overcome driving rain, a ticking suitcase at LaGuardia, a sleepless night, indigestion from all of Artie's candy, many rest stops (who knew we only get to keep the coffee in the system for 100 miles), and the BOPP photographer's wrath to assemble here at Indiana University. The crows is insane, we fit right in! The only thing missing is YOU!

The troops are fed, have schedules and keys, know the way to the restrooms and await our being entertained. The fun is about to start and I'll be back with more updates as we go along.

NOAC Part 2

We are now in Indiana sitting in a Cracker Barrel waiting for breakfast. We have about 60 miles left to Bloomington. Joe Brenner is wondering what grits are, we ordered him a double portion. The group is tired, disheveled, giddy, and looking forward to our time at NOAC. Artie has kept us up all night with the four "C"'s- candy, cake conversation and caffeine.

Updates to follow...

NOAC Part 1

July 31 2009 a small group of Suanhacky brothers set off to the 2009 NOAC which will start tomorrow at Indiana University. In a black 15 passenger van which they rented from Barn rental. 9 brothers packed the van with there gear and there brand new fans which they will need because it's always hot at NOAC. Just when it was time to meet at Burger King on 223 street and Northern Blvd what happens it starts raining. But everyone works together and gets the van packed and ready to go. Artie gives out his nick knacks to everyone, John Power gets the Gps ready to go, all the youth get there electronic toys plugged in for the trip ( I-pods, Blackberry's, and just regular cell phones). Chris Mcdougall is ready to get going, and I go over some last minute details with John. As my ride comes to pick me up and I say my goodbyes and making sure everyone has fun, all the youth decide it's time now to get out of the van and get something to eat. So we will start this trip at 7:30 pm officially to the 2009 NOAC. It is now 11:50 pm and it's time to stop and stretch the old legs, bathroom break for everyone, and on we go again. Hey it's 1:40 am time to fill up again and, are only 50 miles away from Ohio. Everyone is sleeping or listening to there i-pods.
